Company History:
Company was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini. Ferruccio was born in the year 1916 in Renazzo, near Bologna in Italy. He completed his studies in Mechanics and after than he initially worked as a supervisor of the Army’s vehicle maintenance unit in Rodi, Greece. After world war he returned to Italy and purchased old military vehicles and abandoned tanks of Germany to stat the tractor manufacturing business. During the 50s Lamborghini’s tractor business flourished and with increase in revenues he focused on expansion to heating systems, air conditioners, and automobile parts.
Till this Lamborghini didn’t had any plans to start manufacturing sports cars but then an incident happened that marked the foundation of exotic car makers Automobili Lamborghini. During the 60s as the business of Ferruccio Lamborghini grew, he purchased a Ferrari. Once day while driving the car Ferruccio noticed some fault in the car and he was kept waiting for a long time for replacement of the faulty part. Frustrated with the long wait Ferruccio wished he could meet the Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari. However he was kept waiting by Enzo Ferrari as well.
Angered and frustrated with the treatment Lamborghini decided to start his own luxury sports cars company. This marked the foundation of Automobili Lamborghini in 1963. Company delivered its first car in 1964. Company business saw a tremendous growth for a decade. However the global recession of 1973 when the demand for high performance sports cars suddenly dropped. Disappointed with this Ferruccio Lamborghini decided to retire and sold his stake to Swiss businessman Georges-Henri Rossetti. The next decade for the company was full of uncertainty yet some determined employees kept focusing on the company recovery. In 1980 the company was sold Mimram brothers by the orders of Bologna Court. Mimram brothers had a passion for sports cars and they invested heavily in restructuring and hiring qualified automotive engineers and designers.
Later Mimram brothers partnered with Chrysler Corporation who invested S$25 million for Automobili Lamborghini and later took control 1987. It was under Chrysler that Lamborghini profits when up to US$1.32 million. However once again in 90s the company went in loss and car production was also decreased. This resulted in Chrysler looking for investors who can took over the Automobili Lamborghini from them. As a result Automobili Lamborghini saw another new owner MegaTech, Ltd, who purchased the Automobili Lamborghini for US$40 million. Soon after sales increased however there weren’t many profits. Later change in the CEO (Vittorio Di Capua with 40 years experience in Fiat) and acquisitions from Volkswagen, Lamborghini was able to increase sales and profits.
