History of Rolls Royce:
It was May of 1904, when Henry Royce and
Charles Royce struck a nice deal over lunch. Rest was history. Prior to this deal Henry Royce has an
established Electrical & Mechanical Business and Charles Rolls was the owner
of first car dealership selling quality cars in London. The agreement was made that Royce Limited
will manufacture the cars and CS Rolls & Co will sell these cars. Cars were
to be sold by the name Rolls-Royce.
Three years later the Silver Ghost car was
launched and it sooner became the best car in the world that time. Company soon enjoyed great success in car
market, however during the world war 1, in the response to nation’s
requirements Rolls Royce produced an aero engine by the name of Eagle.
Later in 1930s company developed the famous
R engine that was known for its speed and performance. In 1953 Rolls Royce entered civil aviation
market. It was in 1971 that the financial collapse of the company caused the
nationalisation of Rolls Royce Limited and in 1973 the British government
started the Rolls Royce Motors as separate entity to allow Rolls Royce Limited
to focus mainly on jet engine manufacturing business. In the year 1980 company
was acquired by Vickers plc.
After running the business for nearly two decades,
Vickers decided to sell Rolls Royce Motors and Volkswagen Group acquired the
Crewe factory along with the rights to the "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot
and the shape of the radiator grille. They beat the favourites for the deal BMW,
however BMW get the rights of Rolls Royce Brand and the RR logo since both
these were the rights of the Rolls Royce Aviation branch and not the Rolls
Royce Motors. Till 2002 both BMW and
Volkswagen agreed that BMW will supply engines to Volkwagen cars and they will
use Rolls Royce name. Later from Jan 2003, BMW would name the cars as Rolls
Royce and Volkswagen Group's former Rolls-Royce/Bentley division would build
Bentley cars only.
