The history of the Mercedes Benz can be traced from the times of the history when horses were the main source of transportation.  Back in the 1880s Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were working hard on finding the means to provide motor powered transportation in place of horse powered transportation. The creation of internal combustion engine (petrol engine) in 1886 was an historic event. The first petrol powered car called the Benz Patent Motorwagen was created by Karl Benz. This car is widely regarded as the first automobile. During the same time Gottlieb Daimler also worked on his own model of petrol engine. Benz founded the company “Benz & Cie” in the year 1883 and Daimler founded Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in the year 1890.  Both these companies were making profits and became reputed names quickly.  A very rich business man from Austria named Emil Jellinek got interested in Daimler cars and ordered his first car with a top speed of 24 kmph. Later Jellinek demanded a 40 kmph vehicle and few ore vehicles in late 1890s.  Being a popular business man Emil Jellinek began to promote and cell vehicles of DMG (Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft). Jellinek has also a keen interest in car racing and he used to race as pseudonym Mercedes. Mercedes was the name of this daughter (Mercedes is a Spanish girl name that means grace).

In the beginning of 1900 Jellinek and DMG made an agreement according to which Jellinek’s pseudonym (Mercedes) was to be used for new cars and a new engine bearing the name Daimler-Mercedes was to be developed.  After this agreement Jellinek places new bulk orders for Daimler. Thus we can say that first Mercedes was produced in the year 1900. Soon the cars got lots of public attention and were in demand. Mercedes trademark was registered in the year 1902.

DMG and Benz & Cie merged together lately to form the present day Mercedes Benz. This happened immediately after the First World War when both these companies faced tough times as sales were low for the luxury vehicles. Both DMG and Benz & Cie were reputed brands that time but inflation made them market and sell the products together and later merge to form the Daimler-Benz that later became Mercedes Benz.
